10 Superfoods For Your Smoothie

My favorite breakfast is a green smoothie packed full of my favorite superfoods. Seriously people, it’s the easiest thing to make and it’s quick. Plus, you can literally pack it with a million things that you would never in a million years eat by themselves and the fruit of the smoothie covers it all up. Why not get in all your superfoods in one drink before your day even starts? Brilliant.

Here are a list of my top 10 favorite superfoods for your smoothies. I probably use about 5 or 6 superfoods in each smoothie. So I’m constantly changing in up. However the chia seeds, maca powder, bee pollen, chlorella and spirulina are my staples. Check out my Powerhouse Green Smoothie recipe here.

macapowderMACA POWDER: This is perfect for energy, stamina and drive. It is an ancient superfood that comes in a powder form. It helps increase energy, helps the body deal with stress, helps support the immune system and for women helps hormones, fertility and helps promote a healthy sexual response. This is staple smoothie ingredient for me = 1 TBL per smoothie.

chlorellaCHLORELLA: It is a super food green algae. It is packed with protein, beta carotene, vitamin C and B, iron, and chlorophyll. It helps boost energy, encourage detoxification and aids in digestion. Check out Dr. Mercola’s chlorella for a great organic source. I grab the powder and add in about 1 TBL to a smoothie.

spirulinapowderSPIRULINA: Another super food blue green algae. This algae is chalked full of protein, minerals and nutrients that help boost cardiovascular health, support brain and eye health, and boost energy and immunity. It is also high in anti-inflammatory properties, rich in Omega 3′s, iron and calcium. I also add in about 1 TBL of this in my smoothie.

chiaseedsCHIA SEEDS: A powerful source for protein, nutrients, omega 3′s and antioxidants. Plus these will help curb your appetite, help you feel full and regulate your blood sugar. You really wants those omega’s in your diet to help with healthy brain function and a happy heart. Go for about 1 TBL.

bee-pollen-lgBEE POLLEN:
I love bee pollen to help with allergies, so make sure you get some from local bees. Bee pollen is rich in proteins, amino acids, vitamins, including B-complex, and folic acid. It actually contains more amino acids than any meat source which makes is great for vegan and vegetarian diets. Helps increase energy, smoothes skin, treats allergies, boosts immune system, helps digestive system, supports cardiovascular system, and helps with prostate issues and fertility issues. Add in about 1 TBL.

coconutoilCOCONUT OIL: Helps resist bacteria, viruses, fungus, yeast and candida, builds your immune system, regulates hormones, thyroid and blood sugar, reduces cholesterol, reduces heart disease, and helps manage weight. The fatty acids in this superfood fight body fat by converting into energy that boosts metabolism as opposed to saturated fats that add body fat. For more info check out my post on coconut oil here. Rule of thumb – 1 TBL Per 50lb of your weight.

acaiberryACAI: These Brazilian berries are loaded with antioxidants that boost your body’s energy and ability to focus. Their protein and fiber will also keep you feeling full making the Acai berry (or powder) a weight fighting superhero. Its combination of antioxidants, amino acids and omega fatty acids all help slow the aging process by boosting immune and metabolic function and removing destructive free radicals from our bodies. Plus these guys are packed with more protein than an egg.

cacoanibsCACOA NIBS: Antioxidants and a delicious chocolately flavor = perfection.  I love it when I’m told to eat chocolate. It is super rich in magnesium. But seriously, this is chalked full of antioxidants to help boost your immune system. Plus, it contains the amino acid tryptophan, which is used by the body to produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, nature’s feel good chemical. You want about 2-4 Tbl of this one.

gojiberriesGOJI BERRIES: These puppies have tons of vitamins and minerals. Plus, they are delicious. They have been used for centuries in Asian cultures to strengthen eyesight, fight against viruses, balance hormones, and even to assist with the longevity of life. Not feeling so hot? Sweeten things up with 1/2 cup of these berries in your smoothie!

Camu-camu-powderCAMU POWDER: Camu is all about the Vitamin C. The Camu berries come from the Peruvian river regions and are packed with more vitamin C than any orange you’ll ever eat. Like 60 times the amount! It also contains a great dose of antioxidants, amino acids, beta-carotene and potassium.
