I am so excited that it is Spring, and one of the major reasons is because it’s strawberry season. Every week I over zealously buy local strawberries and then remember that it’s only my husband and I that have to get through all of them – and quickly. Real local strawberries mean they are usually very ripe and don’t last very long. Compare that to your white centered Driscoll strawberries that last for weeks. So I thought I would share a few tips on how to store local strawberries.

1. Whatever you DO NOT wash your berries until you are ready to eat them. Strawberries will absorb all that water and begin to turn to mush quick.
2. Take them out of the paper carton. When they begin to touch and sit like that, if one has mold they all get mold. Instead line them out in a single layer in a tupperware container on a paper towel and then cover them with another paper towel and secure the tupperware lid.
3. Toss the bruised ones. Don’t put a bruised strawberry in the tupperware container. You want them all to be at their peak.
2. Put unwashed, unhulled strawberries in a big glass jar and seal tightly.
3. Make sure not to have any bruised ones in there, and you can add a crumpled up paper towel in the jar to soak up any extra moisture.
4. Store in the fridge. Leaving them out in your kitchen makes them break down and create mold quicker.
5. When you are ready to eat them, then wash them and hull them.
The fact of the matter is, you probably won’t get more than 5 days out of local strawberries. And if you don’t do any of these methods a day or two at best. So keep that in mind when you buy them or pick them. Of course there are so many delicious recipes out there to help you incorporate them into both sweet and savory dishes. And, if you want to buy them in bulk – freezing is a very easy way to save them to use throughout the year.
Living seasonally means learning to enjoy fruits and vegetables when they are ripe and at their peak. You just eat them when they are there, and preserve some for later. Letting go of the mind set that fruits and veggies stay good for weeks, is a big learning curve – but a delicious one! I hope you all get to go out and treat yourself to some local strawberries.
