“Sleep, or how little of it we need, has become a symbol of our prowess. We make a fetish of not getting enough sleep, and we boast about how little sleep we get.”
Everyone seems to be singing to the same tune…. I’m tired.. I’m so tired…I feel like everyone I talk to is exhausted.
It’s like exhaustion has become a badge of honor. It’s like people are implying when they say they haven’t gotten enough sleep… “I’m doing some really important things in the world and am just too important to sleep.”
Sleep affects every area of our lives. And there is this myth out there that is teaching us that if we are chasing success we should be up all hours of the night, doing whatever it takes to realize our goals and dreams. There is nothing that makes me more crazy! When we don’t get enough sleep it affects our emotional state, our creativity, our performance, our ability to focus, our leadership, our decision making rationale and our confidence.
So y’all I want more for you than to walk around zombies depleted and exhausted.
But it starts with you committing to:
Make it a top priority
Make it a non-negotiable – meaning come hell or high water your sleep isn’t to be messed with.
Make it sacred – It’s crucial to make this bedtime routine feel scared. Something you create. Something you look forward to. Something that you know will nourish and nurture your soul. Not just a new “should” on your list. I “should” get more sleep. I “should” go to bed. No. Make it sacred. Special. Intentionally bringing some beauty/ritual to it.
Are you getting enough sleep?
Are you feeling exhausted?
Do you feel depleted or run down?
Do you need a lot of sugar/caffeine throughout your day to keep your energy up?
Is your brain foggy?
If you answered yes to any of these, it’s time to create a new bedtime routine.
10 Tips for Creating a Bedtime Routine
Set an appointment for bed
Get some special pajamas
Charge away from the bedroom
Practice Deep Breathing
Soak in the tub
Apply essential oils
Set a Sleep Alarm
Go Public
Get Some New Sheets
Keep it dark and cool
My hope is that you make a new commitment to sleep. To give yourself the gift of slowing down to recharge. That you shift from believe that being exhausted gets your further faster to believing that being rested is your edge. Sleep your way to the top. Being fully rested, alert, focused, energized are the best performance enhancers.
