All any feeling wants is to be welcomed with tenderness. It wants room to unfold. It wants to relax and tell its story. It wants to dissolve like a thousand writhing snakes that with a flick of kindness become harmless strands of rope.

4 STEPS TO PROCESS YOUR EMOTIONS

On this episode join Mary as she shares 4 steps to help you process your emotions, giving you a new way to navigate emotional awareness.

Often times, we believe our emotions are bad, that it’s not safe to feel them, we are bad for feeling them, we are weak for feeling them, and we should suck it up, get over it, relax, be more positive etc.

We instinctively want to avoid feeling our feelings – or only try to chase the “good feelings.” We are ok with pleasure, joy and happiness, but not so ok with fear, grief, anger, and anxiety.

Those emotions leave us exposed and vulnerable. They are often really messy, not socially acceptable, inconvenient and just heavy.  And so instead of simply being with our emotions… We try fix, quiet, get rid of, numb, avoid or overcome them. We take on various coping mechanisms… food, television, gossip, overly full schedules… it’s our way of numbing out. And not feeling.

We have to recognize that in order to be fully alive, well developed, self regulating adults – WE HAVE TO FEEL.

Emotions don’t go away. In fact, they are running the show whether we are aware of it or not. We cannot suppress, press down, or ignore our feelings forever, they will come out and if we aren’t actively processing them, they come out sideways.

So in this episode, Mary will teach you the HOW of healthy emotional processing.

>
The opposite of recognizing that we’re feeling something is denying our emotions. The opposite of being curious is disengaging. When we deny our stories and disengage from tough emotions, they don’t go away; instead, they own us, they define us. Our job is not to deny the story, but to defy the ending—to rise strong, recognize our story, and rumble with the truth until we get to a place where we think, Yes. This is what happened. This is my truth. And I will choose how this story ends.
