“We’re not in this life just to work, we’re in it to live.”
On this episode, join Mary and part time co-host Lindsley Brooks, as they explore a new way of approaching our lives that includes rest. Sadly, we live in a culture that glorifies and rewards “the hustle.” And workaholism is a socially acceptable form of addiction. It is often rewarded with success, money, status, and acknowledgement.
There is a difference between working hard and workaholism. That difference shows up in how we respond to our body when it is speaking to us.
When we “push through” exhaustion instead of pausing to sleep.
When we choose not to eat and continue working even though our body is showing signs of hunger.
When we choose to work over taking time to care for physical body.
But when we cross the line from just being someone who works hard, to straight hustlin’, the rest of our life begins to suffer.
Eventually our physical, mental, and emotional health starts to deteriorate. And the relationships with our loved ones become strained. This is our wake up call. It’s vital that we begin to add in new rhythms of rest into our daily lives to create a little more balance.
But for many of us we find our purpose in work. Work is where we achieve. It is where we receive positive reinforcement. It is where some of our most basic needs are met.
So we have we to tell ourselves a new story about the payoff we receive from resting.
When we begin to rest there will be discomfort at first. If you are used to having a to-do list create a rest list where you can check off restful activities. Maybe start with incorporating active rest where you aren’t just sitting but you are participating in activities that are rejuvenating to you.
We must learn to disconnect our sense of self worth from our level of productivity, and create space and opportunity for more peace, more pleasure, and more nourishment.
ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS…
-Our cultural addiction to work
-Socially acceptable burnout
-Why we are so uncomfortable with rest
-Letting our soul make decisions and not our ego
-Disconnecting our value from our productivity
-The difference between active rest and passive rest
-How to use the wisdom of recovery work for deeper healing
-And much more!
