S2: EP53- Do You Need A Soulcation?

Living Fully Alive Podcast available on Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, Spotify, and Youtube

On this episode, join Mary and her very special guest Melody Miles. Melody is the emerging millennial leader on rest, self-care, and creating space in life for your soul to breathe. Formerly an international expert at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, she managed millions of dollars and helped launch the global campaign to eradicate malaria. After working in 25 African countries by the age of 30, she found herself hyperventilating through a panic attack, confused why she felt so stressed, exhausted, and unhappy inside the life she always thought she wanted. After quitting her dream job, selling her belongings, and traveling solo around the world, Melody founded Soulcation, a company that helps fellow hustlers, perfectionists, and world-changers develop regular self-care routines that revive the soul. In addition to sitting on nonprofit boards and working as an internationally sought-after consultant, Melody is preparing for the release of her book, Soulcation: Living a Life You Don’t Need a Vacation From – bringing her powerful and emotional message about why doing the one thing the world told her not to do was the best thing she ever did.

Busyness has become a status symbol and when we hide in success no one calls us our on our self abandonment.

We are using work and being busy to hide. We don’t have space to process our own emotions and our bodies are crying out for us to create space where we can intuitively hear what we need.

We are our own best healers.

But we haven’t been taught how. We are looking for the answers outside of ourselves but what we need to do is create space to respond to this longing to slow down and hear what we intuitively need.

How do you carve out space for rest when you haven’t been taught how?

The journey is up to you. It will require intentionality and experimentation.

What would you love to do on a vacation? Take a nap? Have a morning to read or write? Have a meal you don’t have to cook? Time to feel good and be with yourself?

You have permission to give yourself these things now. If you can find one thing you love to do everyday for yourself that makes you happy, that is the key to transformation.

We don’t have a lot of time laid out in our culture for rest. How can we advocate for ourselves to create that? Many of go on vacation to escape our lives. But vacation doesn’t solve our root problems. We need to design our lives around the things we really like and desire. When we put everyone’s needs a head of ourself for so long it might take some time to figure out what those desires truly are.

We also haven’t been taught to rest. So we choose a rest that is numbing and what we need is restorative rest. Rest that is truly relaxing and fills our tank up.

In order to tap into that we need to eliminate the limiting belief that time for rest is selfish. Again, it starts by choosing one small thing that you can do everyday. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day where you choose to do something that brings you joy and rest.

In this process we may find we have to let things die in order to create space for new life to come that serves us. We need to create rhythms of rest by strategically and thoughtfully creating space to do things that makes us happy. It can start with 15-30 minutes a day. A date with yourself once a week. Then1 day a month. Then one weekend a quarter. And then one week a quarter. But it starts by creating the time in our day to day lives. We don’t accidentally happen upon rest. This is intentional. We need to make these commitments to ourselves… and keep them.

It is time to align our whole lives so we can do things we enjoy and brings us happiness every single day.
