“Sensations in the body are ground zero, the place where we directly experience the entire play of life.”

Tara Brach

Join Mary as she kicks off this month’s topic of Body Movement.

We all know that moving our body is crucial for our health and well being. Yet, so many of us are disconnected from our bodies and have either lost, or never experienced the joy in moving. We have attached movement to things like punishment and reaching goals that other people have for us. Maybe you grew up in home where your value was attached to your physical appearance. Maybe you have spent a chunk of your life dieting on and off and never seeing sustainable results. Maybe you have never felt comfortable and confident in your body. All of these things can leave us with triggers around movement.

But what if we reshaped our ideas about movement? What if we stopped letting other people dictate how we should move and instead allowed ourselves to find movement that brings us joy? What if we detached movement from the goal of weight loss? What if we stopped looking at movement as a “should?”

Our physical body is how we experience life. Many of us have completely numbed our bodies and we can’t even explain or interpret the sensations we feel in our body. As a result we may find ourselves unable to identify and respond to our bodies most basic needs.

3 Ways To Reconnect to Moving Our Bodies

1) Understand Your Motivation– What is your motivation for working out? What is the purpose? Are You punishing yourself because you ate something you “shouldn’t”? Are you just moving to lose weight? When you don’t enjoy movement you likely have attached it to punishment.

2) Identify Your Preference– Do you know what kind of movement you enjoy? Do you like going to the gym? Do you like to be outside? Do you like to be alone? Do you like to work out with other people? Diversify your movement. Make it fun! If you did it simply for the love of moving what would feel amazing?

3) Take Time To Reflect– Experiment with various kinds of movement and then reflect on how it made you feel. How did it feel in the moment? Did it give you energy or stress you out? How did you feel after? How is your energy? How is your mood? What are your stress levels after? Based on these answers what kind of movement is best for you?

THE ENTIRE PURPOSE of shifting to movement simply for the love of moving is to intuitively listen to your body. And this is another way to PARTNER with your body.

And don’t forget that sometimes you need to REST.

And give you permission to remove the shame. The shame around the way our bodies look, the way our bodies move, and what our bodies are capable of. When we do this we will create the space to find a form of movement we enjoy and we will create a deeper appreciation for our bodies just as they are. Our body is the gateway to being fully and sensually alive.
